Riverside Middle School Fly Tying Club gives students the opportunity to learn the art and science of creating artificial fishing flies used in fly fishing. The club provides a structured, hands-on environment where students use specialized tools and materials-such as hooks, thread, feathers, fur, and synthetic fibers-to design and tie flies that imitate insects and other aquatic life.
The club introduces students to the fundamentals of fly tying, including:
- Basic tool use and safety
- Understanding different types of flies (dry flies, nymphs, stramers)
- Step-by-step tying techniques
- Creativity in color and material selection
- Proper care and organization of tools and materials
Meetings typically include demonstrations, guided practice, adn time for independent tying. The club may also incorporate lessons about aquatic ecosystems, insect life cycles, and ethical angling practices.
